Never Mind The Balearics is Leon Andrews and Peter Taylor — a Sydney touring, events and production outfit running day/night parties since 2008.
We started as a small antidote to formulaic house and techno events. The original brief was simple: a room with great records, a mixed crowd, and zero precious. Eighteen years and a small mountain of vinyl later, that brief is still the brief.
Our crowd is aged anywhere from 18 to 98 — yes, really. (We had a 98-year-old come down to a Marrickville Bowling Club show in 2023. He stayed until 9pm and asked us to “turn the bass up a bit, son”.) Our events are deliberately super-social in the old-school sense: we put the DJ booth in the corner, not on the stage. We want everyone looking at each other, not at us.
Whatever's being played, it's about surprises, weird danceability and heavyweight bass.
Musically, we play everything. Reggae and dub into post-punk; classic soul into ravey house; Brazilian and Caribbean records sat next to European oddities and unexpected jazz. Folk, ambient and chillout tracks get dropped on packed dancefloors. Sometimes a sound effect or a piece of trippy spoken-word will get a look-in. We usually build the temperature up across the day — but we’re just as happy dropping novelty jungle at 3pm as we are at midnight.
Heaps Balearic — our flagship — is a play on the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, and a tongue-in-cheek wave at a word that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Whether you read “Balearic” as a Spanish island chain, a 1980s Ibiza sensibility, or your aunt’s bargain-bin chillout CD: we mean all of the above. (And we put it on a t-shirt.)
Beyond the parties we do production, artist tour management, and the occasional bit of label A&R. If you’re an artist, a venue, or a brand we should be talking to — get in touch.
The dancefloor faces itself, not the DJ. The room flattens. The crowd becomes the show.
Dub into post-punk into jungle. If it surprises us and moves the room, it's in.
18 to 98. No vibe police. No dress code beyond "you can dance in those shoes".
We hire the rig. We tune the rig. We will tell the venue to turn it up. Earplugs at the door.
No spam, no clickbait, no “amazing news!”. Just upcoming events, mixtape drops, and the odd dispatch from the booth.
